Meet Danny, Your Boston Makeup Artist!

As someone who’s been photographing in a studio for almost 10 years, I’ve worked with quite a few makeup artists, and I’ve also had clients show up with their makeup already professionally applied: I used to assume any of this would be fine. Professional makeup is professional makeup, right?

… right?

It turns out, making you look “like yourself, only better” really is such an art. This is especially true in a camera: if any of the colors used aren’t quite right for your skin tone, it will be painfully obvious in your images (and nearly impossible to fix in editing too!). The right makeup is just as important as the right light.

This is why for photo sessions, I recommend one of three strategies: wear no makeup at all, wear the makeup you wear all the time (if you do), or use one of the makeup artists I recommend and trust: they have mastered their craft, and have experience with all ages, genders and skin tones. I’ve also verified through personal experience and the rave reviews of my clients that they’re totally fun to be around!

I started working with Danny of Fine Line Artistry about a year ago on the recommendation of the other makeup artist I work with, and I have been so impressed with his ability to create everything from natural to more glamorous looks that people clearly feel so comfortable in. For the first time, this May I decided to wrap his services right into my Mothers’ sessions so you can be pampered and not worry about looking your best that day: Danny and I have you covered.

Let’s get to know him a little bit better.

Interview with Danny of Fine Line Artistry

Tell us a little bit about your journey into doing professional makeup: what got you interested in it in the first place? Where did you get all your amazing skills?

I have always been creative and artistically driven. I went to hair school and was introduced to makeup briefly after. I fell in love with the creativity, making women feel beautiful, seeing how beautiful they are, and making them feel good about themselves. I have been professionally doing makeup for 17 years. I am internationally published, and a seasoned artist of over 14 seasons of New York Fashion Week.

What do you feel sets you apart from many other makeup artists?

I truly try to treat every person I meet like they are a friend and not a business transaction. I never want it to feel that way. I am always listening to learn and never just doing things that are not what others would want done. To me, doing makeup is an act of service and gives me a sense of purpose in life.

What’s your favorite part of your job overall? Least favorite, if you’re comfortable sharing?

My favorite part of doing makeup is being part of someone’s memorable day and bringing their visions to life. My least favorite part of doing makeup is leaving and not always getting to see the photos!

Sometimes when I suggest professional make-up people get nervous: they don’t often wear make-up, or maybe they had a bad experience or two and are worried they won’t look like themselves. Is there anything you’d like to say to the make-up wary?

I always listen to learn. My approach to makeup is to naturally enhance someone and give them an ethereal glow. I want everyone to look back on pictures in 30 years and still love them the same as they did when they got their makeup done. There’s always a time and place for a more advanced or dramatic style of makeup. However unless I am told to do that, I will not do it. No one-trick pony over here!

What’s your home studio set-up like?

My in home set-up is warm and welcoming. It is a safe space where everyone is welcome. Bonus points…I have a puppy that just loves to love and will jump on your lap and cuddle with you!

Is there one specific product you’d recommend for someone who’s got 5 minutes? What about for a more glamorous night out?

I know they say diamonds are a girls best friend but I truly believe it’s mascara. It can do so much and refresh and open the eyes on no time! A little BB cream is a great face product that gives spf, moisture and coverage! Pop on a subtle lip color that’s sheer coverage (this way you can put it on while you’re in the car without a mirror) and you’re good to go!
If you have the extra 90 seconds: bronzer on the cheeks and eye. A little color in the brows for bonus points!
