School portraits have never had the best reputation, have they? The trendy backgrounds that are always about 5-10 years behind. The stiff, forced smiles or smile-resembling expressions that only appear on school picture day and no other day of the year. The harsh, flat light that manages to make even a child tired. I have a drawer full of pictures from my childhood that we only bring out for a good laugh: my favorite is one where the photographer had all the kids say “pickle” (?!) and so I am mid-word, my mouth slightly open and tongue pressed against my teeth for the L.
It only recently occurred to me that it doesn’t have to be this way! As a fine art studio portrait photographer for adults, I could … apply these same skills to children. Why not?! Authentic, flattering portraits, that actually show your child’s personality? Images you actually want to put on your walls?
I got into the weeds of the organizational aspect of school portrait photography, taking a class on making this all as seamless as possible: for me so I could deliver everything in a timely organized fashion and at prices that make sense for school portraits, but also for school administrators to make this as light a lift as possible for them, and for parents to have the best customer service experience I can deliver. I am thrilled to begin offering these sessions in the fall of 2026.
